in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg
School in 2004, and has held a Critical Writing Fellowship through the
departments of History and Sociology of Science and Health and Societies
before coming to USF. Her research focuses on the role of language

Dr.
Pratyusha Basu
Assistant Professor
Geography
| Dr. Basu’s research interests include rural economies,
environmental movements, and gender issues. Her specific focus is rural
development and agrarian politics in India, and her dissertation compared
two village-level dairy cooperatives. Its aim was to provide a deeper understanding
of the success of India's dairy development program. She also works
with the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Movement to Save the Narmada River), an
anti-dam movement in India, which has questioned the displacement caused
by dams and the increasing corporatization of rural resources.

Dr.
Jennifer Collins
Assistant Professor
Geography
| Jennifer is from the United Kingdom, just north of London.
She participated in a student exchange program in 1995 which allowed her
to study in the United States. She has not only been a student in
both countries, but has also taught at universities in both countries.
Her research concentrates on hurricanes and this is one of the draws to
her for living in Tampa. With another forecasted active hurricane
season, Jennifer hopes to obtain much up-to-date material for her teaching
and research. As well as her love for hurricanes, Jennifer enjoys
traveling and new experiences.

Africana Studies
| Eric D. Duke joins us from Michigan State University
where he will receive his PhD in Comparative Black History in December 2005.
Eric specializes in twentieth-century African American, Caribbean, and Black
Diaspora History, with particular focus on the overlapping and interconnected
histories of these areas. He is especially interested in issues of
“race and nation”, identity construction, Black nation-building,

Nation: Conceptualizing a ‘United West Indies’ in the British
Caribbean and Diaspora”, examines how Caribbean peoples living in
the West Indies, United States, and United Kingdom, as well as African American

debated federation from the beginning of the 20th century to the onset of
British Caribbean independence in the early 1960s. Eric also has a family
that crosses national boundaries: the United States and Jamaica.
